Boosting immunity during COVID-19

How do we boost our immunity during times of the COVID - 19 pandemic?

The COVID-19 outbreak and pandemic is the most discussed topic all around the world today. However, I'd still like to add my thoughts as it is a very relevant topic, not just in the current situation. Boosting our immunity is something that we must deliberately take care of. Diseases tend to affect people more when their immunity is low. Ayurvedic science strongly believes that prevention is always better than cure.

Here are a few simple tips that will go a long way in boosting your immunity -

  1. Practice waking up early and going to bed early. Proper sleep is of utmost importance for one's health.

  2. Make sure to eat food at proper times. Eat plenty of nuts and citrus fruits. Garlic is also good for boosting immunity. Incorporate more vegetables in your diet. Drink 1 - 3 litres of water per day.

  3. Avoid fast food, sodas, sugary juices, tobacco chewing, alcohol, and smoking.

  4. Avoid tea and caffeine.

  5. Exercise daily for a reasonable time, preferably between half and one hour. However, make sure not to over-exert yourself or exercise beyond the limits of your body and fitness, as it will have an adverse effect.

  6. Mental health is equally important. Take time to meditate if possible. Yoga is also a beneficial practice for improving mental and physical health.

  7. Personal hygiene is very important. Ensure that you take a bath twice a day.

  8. Make sure to get at least 10 minutes of sunlight daily.

  9. Take a glass of milk with 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder every day before bedtime.

  10. Drink a glass of juice containing any three of the following - lemon, amla, ginger, puthina, and aloe vera every morning on an empty stomach. Do not put sugar in the juice. You can instead opt for jaggery, which is also very beneficial for improving immunity.

  11. Take a teaspoon of Chyavanaprasham every night. You can also take one teaspoon of triphala choornam with hot water.

  12. It goes without saying that you must wear a mask at all times while outside home.
