ഭാരതീയരുടെ പാചകത്തിൽ ഒഴിച്ച് കൂടാനാകാത്ത മല്ലി എല്ലാവര്ക്കും സുപരിചിതമാണ്. എല്ലാ ആയുർവേദ ആചാര്യന്മാരും മല്ലിയുടെ ഗുണങ്ങളെ കുറിച്ച് ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങളിലും സംഹിതകളിലും വിവരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ധാന്യങ്ങളുടെ ആകൃതിയിൽ ഉള്ളതിനാൽ ധാന്യകം എന്നും ഇതിന്റെ പൂക്കൾ ഒരു കുടയുടെ ആകാരത്തിൽ കുലകളായി കാണുന്നതിനാൽ ഛത്ര ധാന്യം എന്നും സുഗന്ധം ഉള്ളതിനാൽ സുഗന്ധി എന്നും സംസ്കൃത നാമങ്ങളിൽ മല്ലി അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.
ശാസ്ത്ര നാമം - Coriandrum Sativam
രസം (taste) - കഷായം (astringent), തിക്തം (bitter)
ഗുണം - ലഘു (light), സ്നിഗ്ദ്ധം (oily)
വീര്യം (potency) - ഉഷ്ണം
വിപാകം (taste after digestion) - മധുരം
വാതം, പിത്തം, കഫം എന്നീ ത്രിദോഷങ്ങളെയും സമാവസ്ഥയിൽ നില നിര്ത്തുന്നു.
धान्यकं तुवरं स्निग्धं अवृष्यं मूत्रलं लघु।
तिक्तं कटुकं उष्णं च दीपनं स्मृतं।।
ज्वरघ्नं रोचनं ग्राही स्वादु पाकि त्रिदोशनुत्।
तृष्णा दाह वामि स्वास कासमर्श कृमि प्रनुत् ।।
आर्द्रं तु तद्गुणंसादु विशेषात् पित्त नाशितत्।। (भाव प्रकाश)
ഗുണങ്ങൾ
മൂത്ര തടസ്സം ഇല്ലാതാക്കുന്നു
ദഹന ശക്തി വർധിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.
പല തരത്തിലുള്ള പനികൾ ഇല്ലാതാക്കുന്നു.
അരുചിയെ ഇല്ലാതാക്കുന്നു രുചി വർധിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.
ആഗിരണ സ്വഭാവം ഉള്ളതിനാൽ അതിസാരം, malabsorption syndrome ഇവയിൽ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് വരുന്നു.
ഹൃദയാരോഗ്യം വർധിപ്പിക്കുന്നു
വായ് നാറ്റം അകറ്റുന്നു
ദാഹം കുറക്കുന്നു.
ശരീരത്തിലെ പുകച്ചിൽ കുറക്കുന്നു.
ചുമ, ജലദോഷം, ആസ്ത്മ, ശ്വാസം മുട്ടൽ മുതലായ രോഗങ്ങളിൽ ഫലപ്രദമാണ്.
പച്ച മല്ലിയും ഉണക്കമല്ലിയും ഒരേ ഗുണങ്ങൾ ഉള്ളവയാണെങ്കിലും പിത്തരോഗങ്ങളിൽ അധികമായി പച്ചമല്ലിയാണ് ഉപയോഗപ്രദം.
ഉപയോഗ ഭാഗങ്ങൾ
കായ, ഇല, ചെടി മുഴുവനായി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു
ധാരാളം ഔഷധ യോഗങ്ങളിൽ മല്ലി ഉപയോഗിച്ച് വരുന്നു.
ഉദാഹരണം - സൈന്ധവാദി ചൂർണം, പിപ്പല്യാദി ഘൃതം, ഹിംഗുആദിഗുളിക, ദാഡിമാഷ്ടക ചൂർണം, കൂഷ്മാണ്ഡരസായനം മുതലായവ.
ഉപയോഗങ്ങൾ
മല്ലിവെള്ളം പഞ്ചസാര ചേർത്ത് കഴിക്കുന്നത് ശരീരത്തിലെ പുകച്ചിലിനെ കുറക്കുന്നു.
പനിയെ തുടർന്നുള്ള അഗ്നിമാന്ദ്യത്തിൽ മല്ലിയും ചുക്കും 2:1 അനുപാതത്തിൽ കഷായം വച്ച് കഴിക്കുക
മല്ലിയും ചുക്കും പൊടിച്ചു നാരങ്ങാ നീരും കൽക്കണ്ടവും ചേർത്ത് കഴിക്കുന്നത് പനിയുടെ ക്ഷീണം കുറക്കുന്നു.
മല്ലിയും ചുക്കും ചേർത്ത കഷായം സേവിക്കുന്നത് പൈൽസ് രോഗത്തിലെ വേദനയെ കുറക്കുന്നു.
ഛർദിയിരോഗത്തിൽ മല്ലി ഉപ്പും നാരങ്ങാനീരും ചേർത്ത് കഴിക്കുക.
ആമ വാതത്തിൽ (rheumatoid arthritis) മല്ലി, ചുക്കും, ആവണക്കിൻ വേരും ചേർത്ത് കഷായം വച്ച് കഴിക്കുക. വേദന കുറഞ്ഞു കിട്ടും.
10 ഗ്രാം ജീരകപ്പൊടിയും, 20 ഗ്രാം മല്ലി പൊടിയും വെല്ലം ചേർത്ത് ചൂടാക്കി കഴിക്കുന്നത് വാത രക്ത (gout) രോഗികൾക്ക് ആശ്വാസം നൽകുന്നു.
രാത്രിയിൽ മല്ലി വെള്ളത്തിൽ കുതിർത്തു വച്ച് രാവിലെ വെറും വയറിൽ
ആ വെളളം കുടിക്കുന്നത് പ്രമേഹരോഗത്തിനു ഉപയോഗപ്രദമാണ്.
മല്ലി കുതിർത്ത വെളളം കണ്ണിൽ ഒഴിക്കുന്നതും, കണ്ണ് കഴുകുന്നതും കണ്ണിലെ പുകച്ചിലും മറ്റു പിത്തരോഗങ്ങളും ഇല്ലാതാക്കുന്നു.
മൺപാത്രത്തിൽ മല്ലി ചതച്ചിട്ട് വെളളം ഒഴിച്ച് വച്ച് കുടിക്കുന്നത് പിത്തരോഗങ്ങളിലും, ഉഷ്ണകാലത്തെ ചൂടിനെ ചെറുക്കനും വളരെ ഫലപ്രദമാണ്.
Coriander is something that is unavoidable in everyday Indian cooking. All Aacharyas in ayurveda have described in detail the properties and benefits of this plant in their books. Coriander has different names in Sanskrit; since it is in the shape of grains, it is called as 'Dhanyaka'; since its flowers are in the shape of umbrellas, it is called 'Chathra Dhanyam'; and since it is aromatic, it is called 'Suganthi'.
Scientific Name - Coriandrum Sativum Rasam (taste) - Kashayam (astringent), Thiktham (bitter)
Gunam - Laghu (light), Snighdam (oily)
Veeryam (potency) - Ushnam
Vipakam (taste after digestion) - Madhuram
It maintains balance to all tridoshas namely; Vatam, Pittam, and Kapham.

Eliminates many types of fevers
Reduces tastelessness and enhances taste.
It is used in diarrhea and malabsorption syndrome due to its absorbent nature.
Improves health of the heart
Eliminates bad breath
Reduces thirst
Reduces burning sensations
Effective in coughs, colds, asthma and shortness of breath
Although green coriander and dried coriander have similar properties, green coriander is more effective for diseases associated with increased Pittadosha.
Parts of the plant that is used -
The seed, leaf, and plant in the entirety can be used for making medicines. A lot of oushadhayogas use coriander in its preparation.
E.g. - Saindavaadi Choornam, Pipplyadi Ghritham, Hinguaadi Gulika, Daadimashtaka Choornam, Kushmandarasaayanam, etc.
Uses
Taking coriander water with sugar reduces burning sensations in the body.
A kashaayam of coriander and dry ginger in the ratio 2:1 can be taken to reduce the effects of a loss of appetite that follows a fever.
Eating coriander and dry ginger powder mixed with lemon juice and kalkandam reduces the fatigue associated with fever.
Taking a kashaayam of coriander and dry ginger reduces the pain associated with piles.
To reduce vomiting, take coriander with salt and lemon juice.
To reduce the pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis, take a kashaayam of coriander, dry ginger, and eranda root.
Taking a mixture of 10g cumin powder, 20g coriander powder heated with jaggery gives relief to gout patients.
Soaking coriander in water in the night and taking that water on an empty stomach in the morning is good for diabetes.
Putting water that is infused with coriander in the eyes and washing eyes with that water is good for reducing burning in the eyes and other diseases associated with Pitta.
To reduce summer heat and Pitta diseases, crush coriander in a mud pot, and pour and drink water from it.
