Hair Health in Ayurveda

Hair growth, hair loss, premature graying and baldness are one of the most common concerns of human beings. Of these, premature graying and seasonal graying can sometimes be stressful for people, especially women. Today, there are too many YouTube channels and cosmetic companies that take advantage of this perceived problem, and people's hair as well as pockets bear the brunt of this scenario. While thick black hair used to be the concept of beauty for women, the new generation often tends to experiment on their hair. We can see a lot of parlours, even in smaller towns.

Ayurveda describes hair as the "Upadhathu of Asthidhathu". Kapha plays an important role in the thickness of hair, and the colour of hair can be attributed to Pitta. A person of Kapha prakruthi will have thick, black hair, and greying of hair will be rare in such people. Signs of greying are common for people with Pitta Prakruthi. For people with Vatha prakruthi, hair is likely to be brittle and prone to reduction in thickness. Today, even young people experience premature greying of hair. Lifestyle, stress, hormonal imbalances, virudha aahara, chlorine in the water, pollutants in the air, chemicals used to dye hair and so on have been found to cause hair loss and premature greying. Heredity also plays an important role in baldness and grey hair.

Ayurveda prescribes many remedies that can help with hair regrowth, hair growth and hair colour. It is important to use medications that are tailored to each person's body type. The first thing to do is to keep the body and mind healthy. It is essential to get proper nutrition through your diet. In the olden days, people used to wash their hair with a variety of natural homemade shampoos (thali) after applying a suitable thailam. It was said to heal not only the head but also the sensory organs such as the eyes and ears.

Applying the above-mentioned oils on the scalp alone does not completely restore the health of the hair. Illnesses can also often contribute to hair loss. In such cases, external treatment alone is not the answer. In many cases, hair loss occurs due to viral fever, anemia and indigestion. It is important to seek medical attention for this. There have also been situations where people have experience hair loss after contracting COVID-19. It is important to not worry about it and work on improving your immunity and health by including good food in the diet, which will gradually reduce such hair loss.

Food that improves hair health -
