Treatment of acne

What is the treatment for acne in Ayurveda?

Pimples are very common in teenagers. But in some people, it can affect hair follicles and oil glands, which leads to the accumulation of an oily substance called sebum under the surface of the skin, giving rise to acne.

The causes for acne could be one or many of the following -

- Hormonal imbalances

- Consumption of certain oily and sugary food items

- Exposure to dust particles

- Stress

- Loss of sleep

Apart from these, picking on acne or its scab wounds can worsen the condition.

The most basic step to be taken is to keep your face clean, and to stay away from harsh chemicals like bar soap. Be sure to remove your makeup before you sleep. Besides that, you can try any one of the following remedies to reduce acne -

  • Wash your face with gram flour or moong powder (ചെറുപയർപൊടി). If you have oily face, opt for gram flour. In case of dry skin, moong powder is a better option.

  • After washing your face well, apply a face pack of Eladi churnam with milk or tulsi juice. Wash after 15 minutes. Be consistent with this treatment to see results.

  • For people with dry skin, apply Kumkumadi Tailam and keep it on your face for 30 minutes, after which it can be washed off.

  • Apply a face pack of 1 teaspoon chandanam, 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder and yogurt/milk. Keep it on your face for 15 minutes before washing it off. Turmeric is known to have healing properties and chandanam has a cooling effect on your face.

  • Take 25 to 30 ml Ushiraasavam mixed with Khadirarishtam everyday morning and evening after food.

Diet habits to be followed -

  • Treat digestive issues if any, as it exaggerates acne.

  • Hydration is essential for healthy skin. Make sure to drink 1-3 litres of water everyday.

  • Avoid fried items, sodas, sweets, and coloured drinks.

  • Make sure to get 6-7 hours of sleep

  • Practice relaxation meditation.

In case acne still persists, consult an ayurvedic practitioner for further diagnosis of the issue. It is always better to opt for Ayurveda because ayurvedic treatment does not have any side-effects.
